Personal Finance Education for Our Kids

November 10, 2018

I want to say thank you to Ms. Scharmer and Totino Grace High School for having me speak to her Personal Finance class.  I have complained for years that I don't think our kids receive enough, or any, education on basic personal finance.  Ms. Scharmer is also working with Nex Gen Personal Finance (www.ngpf.org) to bring personal finance education to high schools across the country with the hope of making it a mandatory class.

Her class was great, engaged, and interested.  We spent the our discussing the basics of personal finance, budgeting, and saving.  We answered questions such as:

What are good ways for a young person to start saving?

What are common mistakes I might make with my finances?

What are good ways to pay off student loans?

Again, the kids were great and it was encouraging to see young people interested in personal finance.  I give Ms. Scharmer a ton of credit for taking the initiative to bring this topic to our kids.
